Preferred Qualifications Position Summary
The Outdoor Program Specialist is an integral position for the Rock Eagle 4-H Center (Eatonton, GA) Environmental Education department, and the person in this role would give direct instructional support to participants in the Environmental Education and Summer Camping Programs, as well as adult/youth conference groups attending Rock Eagle 4-H Center. The Outdoor Program Specialist will be responsible for the following program areas: Canoeing, Challenge Course, Orienteering, High Ropes Adventure Course, Swimming Pools, and Trail Management (~5 miles of marked and maintained trails). Management of these program areas includes, but is not limited to: site maintenance, material inventory, training and management of staff, curriculum updates, and group scheduling. The person in this position will assist with supervising/ scheduling seasonal and temporary employees. The Outdoor Program Specialist would be expected to achieve Red Cross instructor status as a lifeguard. The Outdoor Program Specialist would be responsible for hiring, training, managing, and scheduling lifeguard staff at two swimming pools based on group requests. This position includes obtaining a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification. The Outdoor Program Specialist would be expected to achieve ACCT Level 2 instructor status and have the ability to work at height on the adventure course. Additional responsibilities will include training of staff, curriculum development, maintaining teaching spaces, and class materials. Weekend and evening work is involved.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Ability to work independently as well as within a team. Experience and knowledge in the planning and leadership of youth education programs. Ability to provide programmatic and facilitation support for the environmental education and summer camp programs. Fundamental knowledge of computers and applications. Ability to communicate effectively with youth and adults. Ability to achieve instructor status in lifeguarding and high ropes. Broad knowledge of the natural environment and comfort working outdoors.
Physical Demands
Work in adverse physical and weather conditions. Walk at least 4 miles daily. Lift 50 pounds. Driving.

Manage the Rock Eagle Outdoor Program: Canoeing, Challenge Course, Orienteering, Outdoor Adventure Course, Swimming Pools, and Trail Management (~5 miles of marked and maintained trails). This includes the management of Seasonal Environmental Education staff that would be assigned to the Outdoor Program.
Percentage of time 25 Duties/Responsibilities
Assist with planning, evaluating, marketing, teaching, and implementing all programs within the environmental education and summer camping programs, including high ropes and lifeguarding. .
Percentage of time 25 Duties/Responsibilities
Maintain teaching spaces and material inventory for the Outdoor Program area.
Percentage of time 20 Duties/Responsibilities
Assist with training, supervision, evaluation, curriculum development for environmental education and summer camp staff.
Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities
Hire, train and schedule lifeguards for 2 swimming pools during summer month.
Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities
Attend training and conferences as necessary.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
