The Tulane Native American and Indigenous Studies Program (NAIS) and Department of English seek applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in U.S. Native American and Indigenous literatures and cultures. We encourage applications from scholars working on pre-contact to 20th and 21st century literatures and cultures. Scholars with research and teaching interests in environmental humanities and ecocriticism are especially encouraged to apply. While competency in an indigenous language of North America is not required, Tulane offers courses in Choctaw, Tunica, and several indigenous languages of the Americas, and has a commitment to language learning across the curriculum.

The successful candidate will be jointly appointed in the department and program, with their tenure home in English. The standard teaching load for tenure-line faculty in the School of Liberal Arts is 2-2, which will be divided evenly between the two units. The candidate will teach across the curriculum, including upper-level electives, methods courses, graduate seminars, and required core courses in both units, and be involved in the further development of the expanding NAIS Program.

New Orleans, also known as Bulbancha ("Place of Other Tongues") has been, and continues to be, a center for cultural interchange among the cultures of the Gulf South and the Caribbean. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty in Africana Studies, Environmental Studies, the Stone Center for Latin American Studies, and other entities within Tulane's School of Liberal Arts. This position represents a key part of Tulane's commitment to Native American and Indigenous Studies and engagement with Indigenous communities of the Gulf South.
