Job Description
Position is responsible for ensuring the safe and effective use of medications according to professional standards and practices.
Additional Job Description
1. Verifies medication order transcription and assessment of appropriateness based on specific patient parameters for indication, interactions, duplicates, allergies, route availability, and other pertinent pharmacokinetic characteristics. Compounds, labels, packages, and dispenses pharmaceuticals. Supports the development and monitoring of clinical pharmacy parameters.
2. Advises patients, families, and other healthcare providers in the use of various medications including dosage, side effects, and composition. Educates and trains staff on clinical activities and programs.
3. Ensures accuracy and sterility of compounded IV products and abides by USP<797> and USP<800> statutes and regulatory components.
4. Maintains accurate controlled substance counts and accurately dispenses utilizing current procedures
5. Assists with inventory control by assuring adequate stock rotation, inventory verification counts, and expiration audits. Complies with manufacturers' requirements for safe drug handling and storage. Confirms medications are located in automated dispensing cabinets to facilitate cart-less dispensing. Notifies the pharmacy buyer of low-inventory items or trends in utilization and assists with determining alternatives.
6. Fills used crash carts and maintains coinciding paperwork, checking for outdated and missing medications. Maintains full and up-to-date medication trays or kits.
7. Completes a minimum of 1 assignment for the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee a year as assigned by the Director of Pharmacy or his/her designee.
8. Serves on a minimum of 1 project team, or participates on one 1 hospital committee, as assigned by the director of pharmacy. Reports back to department at department meetings on pertinent information.
9. Provides inpatient pharmacy support, direct patient care and clinical monitoring as staffing or scheduling needs require as well as fulfilling the essential functions of the specialist.
10. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Pharmacy or designee.

(Infrequent) Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force. (Frequent) Examples include: To transfer a 100 lb. patient that can not assist in the transfer requires 50 lbs. of force. For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (Continuous) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction.
