Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Health Promotion, Sport Management, Recreation or a related field.
- Experience working directly as a personal trainer or group fitness instructor.
- Previous successful administrative experience in a campus recreation setting.
- Must possess a current nationally recognized personal training certification (e.g., ACE, ACSM, NSCA, NASM) and/or nationally recognized group fitness certification (e.g., ACE, ACSM).
- Current American Red Cross certification or ability to obtain within 1 month of hire.
Position Summary
The Coordinator for Fitness is a full-time professional staff member who plays a critical operational role within the Department of Recreational Sports' fitness program. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Fitness, this position supports the delivery and execution of group fitness, personal training, small group training, and fitness outreach. The Coordinator is responsible for hands-on program management, including scheduling, equipment oversight, student staff supervision, and direct engagement with students and participants. This position focuses on the day-to-day logistics of fitness programming, ensuring smooth operations across multiple service areas and maintaining a consistent presence in Ramsey Student Center facilities. The Coordinator also directly supervises Fitness Program Assistants and assists with the development and support of 70+ part-time fitness staff, contributing to their onboarding, training, and ongoing development.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Proven ability to teach group fitness classes or work 1-1 with personal training clients.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Evidence of training staff to promote student learning and development.
- Proven ability to develop effective working relationships with university students, faculty, staff, alumni, administrators, and the community.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team of fitness professional staff.
- Move throughout the 440,000 sq. ft. Ramsey Student Center, Lake Herrick sandy beach and pavilion, and the departmental field complexes; stand; walk; sit; use hands; reach with hands and arms.
- Climb up and down ladders and over small retaining walls; walk across narrow accesses such as 2 ft. walkways and 4 ft. wide bulkheads and operate department-owned vehicles to run job-related errands.
- Lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds.
- Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and focus.
- Distinguish between non-toxic air flow and noxious odors such as chlorine and gas.

Program Management:
- Serve as a positive and active member of the fitness team through close communication and collaboration with the Fitness team to deliver excellent and innovative programs. Communicate effectively with participants, staff and supervisors providing exceptional customer service in all interactions.
- Maintain an active presence in the Ramsey Student Center and fitness programs.
- Assist in the daily execution of group fitness, personal training, and small group training programs.
- Maintain studio readiness, including equipment setup, cleanliness, and functionality.
- Assist with scheduling and logistics for group fitness classes, small group training, and personal training sessions.
- Monitor program attendance and collect participant feedback for continuous improvement.
- Serve as a substitute instructor or trainer when needed to ensure program continuity.
- Manage equipment inventory and studio readiness across Ramsey Center fitness spaces.
- Work closely with the Associate Director to coordinate campus physical well-being and fitness outreach programming, working closely with the fitness team to fill program requests.
- Support outreach and wellness events such as Ramsey Palooza, BeWellUGA, and departmental tabling.
- Assist in the instruction of the NASM Personal Trainer prep course and instruct AFAA Group Fitness Instructor prep course.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with current and potential participants and alumni to maximize program reach and success.
- Develop recommendations and assist in the implementation of new classes, programs, and activities based on industry trends.
Student Personnel Management & Development:
- Serve as a professional leader, educator, and role model for the fitness team and anticipate personnel and programmatic needs for maximum effectiveness.
- Assist in the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, mentoring, and evaluation of a team of 70+ part-time fitness staff in collaboration with the Assistant Director for Fitness.
- Lead onboarding and orientation for new instructors and trainers; working closely with the area program assistants.
- Directly supervise and empower a team of 3-6 Fitness Program Assistants including the organization and leadership of program assistant meetings.
- Regularly update staff schedules and personnel files and records to ensure the fitness team holds current American Red Cross and fitness certifications.
- Provide day-to-day support, coaching, and performance feedback to part-time staff.
- Assist in maintaining high quality fitness programs and staff education through part- time staff performance evaluations and fitness professional development offerings.
- Actively incorporate Departmental Vision, Mission, and Values and foster a positive and inclusive work environment that supports staff growth into staff training and development.
- Provide accurate information and training on University, Departmental, and fitness policies and procedures including but not limited to: EAP, Employee Handbooks, Safety Training, Staff Accountability/Expectations/Training, etc.
Cultural Development:
- Model the Recreational Sports values of RamFam, Excellence, Customer Service, and Spirit of Recreation in day-to-day interactions.
- Work as an integral member of the Recreational Sports staff and Fitness team in pursuing the departmental vision of providing the best possible recreational learning opportunities every day through excellent facilities, programs, services, and experiences.
Resource Stewardship:
- Act as a good steward of university resources.
- Critically evaluate program attendance, industry trends, and equipment needs (inventory) based on patron usage and participant feedback with the guidance of the Assistant and Associate Director.
