Position Summary
The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology in the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a visionary and experienced chair, who will accelerate our upward trajectory and growth. Departmental faculty teach and perform research on the physiological, pharmacological, nutritional, neurological, toxicological, and computational foundations of disease and therapeutics, including systems biology, bioinformatics, and predictive modeling. As such, our research is far-reaching, exploring all aspects of physiology and pharmacology and seeking solutions to some of today's most pressing health issues. Similarly, our educational mission is dynamic and reaches a growing number of undergraduate, graduate and professional students. We offer a PhD in Integrative Physiology and Pharmacology, are part of UGA's Interdisciplinary Toxicology and Neuroscience Programs, and support our home college's dual DVM-PhD program. We also have a thesis M.S. program in physiology and pharmacology in Comparative Biomedical Science and a non-thesis, professional Master's program with an area of emphasis in physiology and pharmacology as part of the CBS program. The Department also is home to UGA's fastest growing undergraduate major, Biomedical Physiology. Further, the Chair of this department will have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the future of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Georgia, as new Schools of Medicine and Nursing will be joining the established UGA health-related Colleges of Pharmacy, Public Health and Veterinary Medicine in shared initiatives.
The Chair will be responsible for executing administrative, educational, and research functions of the Department; managing all staff and faculty, including full-time, part-time, adjunct, emeritus, volunteer, and guest faculty; and providing leadership for curriculum management, instruction and scholarly activity, including research, publications, and funding. Responsibilities include supporting College and University accreditation processes and assigning faculty FTE distribution across teaching, research, and service to meet institutional needs. The Chair oversees faculty time allocation, departmental budgets, the Promotion and Tenure process, and faculty development opportunities to ensure the educational and financial strength of the Department. Additionally, the Chair represents the department within the College and University organizational structure.
The Chair duties will reflect approximately 50% of the appointment with the remainder dedicated to faculty responsibilities, including teaching, research, and/or service. While the offered rank upon hire will be determined by the Rank, Tenure and Promotion policy, successful candidates at a minimum must meet the requirements for appointment as a tenure-track associate or full professor.
