Preferred Qualifications Position Summary
The feed mill manager of the Poultry Research & Education Center Feed Mill is a new position and would be the primary contact for faculty, staff and graduate students in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) to coordinate manufacturing of poultry and swine research diets. This position is instrumental to expansion of functionality of the facility through coordination of facility renovation, repair, operation and maintenance. Further, this position is instrumental to insuring regulatory compliance for food producing animals, and diligence to feedstuff quality and SOP development and adherence is of upmost importance. Staff supervision, training, and schedule coordination is a key to success of the position, in concert with managers of other research and education centers within CAES. Financial responsibilities include budgeting for facility operation, supply and ingredient procurement, and coordination of billing to internal clientele with appropriate business offices. This is an exempt position reporting directly to the department head for the Department of Poultry Science.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Thorough knowledge of principles, methods, & techniques of livestock and poultry diets as related to institutional needs and purposes.
- Thorough knowledge of feed manufacturing processes and equipment care and maintenance.
- Ability to plan and direct large scale diversified manufacturing activities and to direct skilled and unskilled employees in varied operations in a safe manner.
- Ability to keep records, budget, and develop SOPs, train skilled and unskilled staff to follow SOP's is inherent to success of the position.

The manager provides primary oversight of feed manufacturing with supervision over students, faculty, and technicians involved in the process. Feed manufacturing would involve scheduling and overall facility operations.
Percentage of time 40 Duties/Responsibilities
Facility maintenance and renovation coordination. Due to the nature of heavy equipment operation, proper operation and maintenance of equipment is imperative to the facilities supporting role of animal research. This position would coordinate with internal and external vendors for repair, renovation and expansion of facility functions to be predictive of current and future needs in concert with departmental and college leadership.
Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities
Training of staff on SOPs, including operation, safety, quality compliance. Supervision also includes coordination of staff with other research and education center managers based on demand. Staff supervision and scheduling of Feed Mill use.
Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities
Budgetary responsibility for including ingredient and supply procurement and preparation of billing to primary investigators for feed preparation across Poultry Science and Animal and Dairy Science Departments. Budget preparation and adherence is critical to infrastructure maintenance.

Regulatory compliance for a feed manufacturing facility for food producing animals, animal husbandry and welfare. As quality and regulatory compliance considers a feed mill to be a food manufacturing facility, regulatory compliance would include that of investigatory compounds, regulated drugs (e.g. antibiotics), as well as inclusion of best management plans to reduce pathogen exposure within the facility and system's conveyances.
Percentage of time 5 Duties/Responsibilities
Back-up animal husbandry and welfare as needed in rotation with Poultry Research and Education Center. This position will provide weekend support on rotation with other staff at the center. This includes daily bird checks throughout the facility, and to ensure proper environmental, feed, and watering system operation.
