Position Description
The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures invites applications for a position as an Instructional Professor (open rank) in Portuguese and Spanish with an expected start date of September 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The selected candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Instructional Professor, Associate Instructional Professor, or Instructional Professor, depending on qualifications and educational background. The initial appointment is for a minimum of 2 years, with longer initial terms possible depending on qualifications and initial rank. Review and progression schedule are determined by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Service Employees International Union.
Responsibilities include both teaching and service duties. Teaching normally consists of seven courses across three quarters at all levels of Portuguese or Spanish language. One language course may periodically be replaced by a non-language course in an area of Portuguese or Spanish culture or a course related to language pedagogy. Service duties related to the Portuguese language program may include advising undergraduate theses, creating and overseeing placement exams and graduate language exams, teaching independent studies, or other Portuguese program-specific duties. The position also includes service, such as co-curricular activities and outreach. Instructional Professors of all ranks are required to engage in regular professional development.
Salary Range or Pay Grade:
Assistant Instructional Professor: $75,676-$81,729; Associate Instructional Professor: $81,730-$88,459; Instructional Professor: $88,460-$98,000 (academic year 2026-2027)
This base pay range is for a nine-month academic appointment paid over twelve months. The position also includes a relocation allowance for qualifying expenses.

Qualifications
Applicants must have previous experience teaching Portuguese and Spanish at the post-secondary level and must demonstrate sufficient language proficiency for teaching Portuguese and Spanish in a university context, e.g., through an ACTFL-certified result at the Superior level or higher, or through receipt of an advanced degree earned in a Portuguese and Spanish-language context. An MA in a field related to Portuguese and Spanish is required, a PhD is preferred. Candidates with specialized training in second language acquisition, second language pedagogy, and/or assessment are especially encouraged to apply.
