Description
DescriptionSalary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
Note: There are two openings.
Employees at this level provide interpreting services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Examples of Duties
Interprets simultaneously with the presentation, classroom lectures and/or other presentations and events from English into sign language; interprets student responses from sign language into English;
interprets at special events (such as field trips, student-instructor conferences, and special meetings);
assists Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, employees, and others in situations where interpretation may be essential;
participates in regular interpreter staff meetings and in-service training workshops;
obtains and reviews related materials prior to providing interpreting services;
provides awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of the deaf and hard of hearing population;
performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- A. For public school pre K-12 Educational Interpreters, statement of "approval" from the Illinois State Board of Education which shall be identified as valid for sign language interpreting: Pursuant to 23 IL Administrative Code Section 25.550 "including Interim Approval".
 OR
- B. For post-secondary education, Interpreters must show proof of current licensure at the Intermediate Proficiency level or higher as specified in Section 1515.90 of the Interpreter for the Deaf Act of 2007 Rules.
Preferred: Credentials qualifying the candidate for Advanced Interpreter Licensure.
Supplemental Information
Illinois Residency Requirement: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position.

About Civil Service Examination/Testing: The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of application materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, your application will move forward for examination/testing in which you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. This score will be emailed to the email address noted on your application. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
