Job DescriptionThe University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) is currently recruiting a Laboratory Research Assistant. Maryland Genomics at the Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) is a high-throughput laboratory and data analysis team supporting the scientific programs of IGS and its collaborators, both across the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus and around the globe. Using high-throughput sequencing, single-cell, and spatial multi-omics, qPCR/dPCR, and bioinformatics platforms, Maryland Genomics generates and analyzes high-quality genomic data in a cost-effective manner.
This is a Full-Time, Temporary, Contractual position.
Primary Duties:
- Follow laboratory's established policies and procedures.
- Manage specimen receipt and accessioning.
- Assist in routine laboratory maintenance, including equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Contribute to lab cleanliness and a safe laboratory environment.
- Perform some or all components of primary sample transfer, DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, and qPCR.
- Maintain records for equipment and reagent validation.
- Research and development activities for ongoing and future testing efforts.
- Maintain thorough documentation of laboratory activities, protocol deviations, equipment malfunctions, and corrective actions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to laboratory research.
Other: May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Knowledge of position requirements.
- Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws.
- Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems.
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently.
- Knowledge of NextGen sequencing and library prep experience is desirable.
- Ability to demonstrate, understand, apply, and adhere to the UMB Core Values of Accountability, Civility, Collaboration, Diversity, Excellence, Leadership, and Knowledge.
Hiring Range: $23.00-$25.00 per hour - Commensurate with education and experience
