Description
SummaryThe Medical Research Technician will perform technical laboratory work. The technician will be trained to work with Borrelia burgdorferi spirochete bacteria and their tick vector, Ixodes scapularis. This position will be expected to perform routine processes such as bacterial growth and counting, and tick collection from infected animals. Specialized assays such as PCR and RT- PCR may be requested. The technician will keep accurate records of experiments and assist senior personnel, when needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of laboratory equipment usage and maintenance
• Ability to follow protocols with precision and accuracy
• Knowledge of laboratory safety and regulatory requirements
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel Spreadsheet software for data entry and analysis.
Special Required Ability for Incumbents Who Have Contact or Exposure to Animals or Animal Tissues:
Ability to complete and pass successfully the required occupational health screening referenced in the University's Animal Handler Health Surveillance Program on an annual basis.
Required Background Check, Physical, And Drug Screening for Incumbents Who Have Contact or Exposure to Animals Or Animal Tissues:
Selected candidates must complete and pass a background check and an occupational health screening as a condition of employment. For identified jobs, a drug screening will also be required. The background investigation, required occupational health screening, and any required drug screening will be conducted after a conditional employment offer has been extended.
Required Education and/or Experience
• Bachelor's Degree and 1 year of directly related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• 2 years of experience working in a research laboratory environment
• Experience with rodent handling and microscopy
