Description
The Digital Gardener Initiative (DGI) is designed to cultivate a culture committed to improving digital literacy across all Indiana University (IU). While DGI itself has multiple branches, its primary effort is the Digital Gardener Faculty Fellows program, which empowers faculty from across IU campuses and regional centers to integrate digital literacy, digital creativity, and digital learning into the curriculum. The program, led by Justin Hodgson (Associate Professor of Digital Rhetoric at IU Bloomington), features weekly, virtual professional development sessions focused on learning how to better utilize digital tools and platforms to design more meaningful learning experiences for students. A byproduct of the program's design is that it also fosters a community of digitally innovative educators. The program has more than 250 graduates, who directly impact more than 25,000 students each semester across the IU system. This is, of course, a particularly important matter in our current educational landscape, as not only has Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative AI put an increasing emphasis on the need for student and faculty digital literacy skills, but we also continue to face a markedly pronounced digital divide, which breaks disproportionately across race, gender, and class.
This fall, we are continuing to expand the program to include not only our usual IU cohort - 35 new IU faculty/staff participants (representing a range of IU campuses, disciplines, and ranks) - but also an Open Cohort, drawing educators from colleges and universities outside the IU system.
Job Summary
The Digital Gardener Intern will explore the impact of digital literacies and enterprise technologies on the learning experience and work with innovative faculty leading the way toward transformative education. Under the guidance of DGI Director, Justin Hodgson, and in conjunction with varying Mentor Gardeners (other subject matter experts and faculty who have completed the program) connected to the Faculty Fellows program, the intern will embark on a journey to master the art of digital storytelling. They will hone their skills in producing high-quality social media content, crafting compelling images and infographics, and designing materials for both print and digital distribution.
