The Office of Student Life is focused on building a strong foundation to ensure every student's Indiana University (IU) experience is positive, safe, healthy, and meaningful. Staff within multiple departments of the Office of Student Life aim to help students navigate their time at IU, providing the tools they need to be successful in school and after graduation. Students are our priority, and their health, safety, and overall well-being are our core mission.Mentoring Services and Leadership Development (MSLD) serves as a go-to resource for undergraduate students seeking personal encouragement, career support, leadership development, academic advice, and more. Indiana University's Office of Student Life administers MSLD as a way to support students, especially young people from underrepresented and underserved backgrounds, throughout their academic journey and beyond.
Job Summary
Faculty and Staff for Student Excellence (FASE) Peer Mentors provide leadership, guidance, and transitional assistance for first year students attending Indiana University Bloomington. Additionally, they serve as a resource of support in assisting with the retention and on-time graduation efforts. All FASE Peer Mentors report to the Director of MSLD but are also subject to take instructions from front office support staff and/or a Graduate Mentor Coordinator.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Provide guidance and direction to first year students at Indiana University
- Assist FASE students with their social and academic adjustment to college
- Meet with FASE students during virtual office hours
- Maintain reasonable virtual and/or in-person contact with protégés (Zoom, office, phone, text, e-mail, etc.)
- Serve as a liaison between students and the FASE Program, alerting staff of any pressing student concerns
- Attend FASE activities virtually or in-person as directed
- Instill and teach values relative to education and leadership excellence
- Plan and present activities programs to FASE students for developmental purposes throughout the academic year
- Collaborate with peer mentors and FASE Advisory Board (FAB) student organization in planning and implementing virtual activities for students
- Provide logistical assistance to FAB and Mentor Apprenticeship Program (MAP) Coordinator
- Provide documentation of protégé-mentor contacts through the AdRx advising tool, as well as the bi-weekly Session Summaries at the end of each pay period
- Conduct virtual or in-person mentoring sessions through office hours or as arranged with protégés
- Refer students to university resources such as Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the Academic Support Centers, or Writing Tutorial Services
- Complete FASE mentor, program, and activity surveys and evaluations
- Provide programmatic advice and suggestions to the FASE director
- Use virtual tools such as email, Skype for Business, Zoom, Canvas, AdRx, etc. as appropriate
- Provide both in-person and virtual support to first-year students at Indiana University Bloomington
- Perform other duties as arranged with the FASE Director
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
- Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University as a sophomore or above in class standing
- 2.8 G.P.A. or higher
- Enrolled in a 1 credit hour mentoring course, Fall and Spring Semesters
Preferred
- Experience as a peer mentor, RA, or tutor in high school or college
- Experience in a leadership position in a student club, cultural organization, or academic society
- Experience volunteering with youth programs, educational outreach, or community mentoring
Required
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrates initiative, responsibility, and the ability to guide others
- Ability to balance mentoring responsibilities with academic and personal commitments
- Comfortable with presenting or leading group discussions or events
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Additional Information
Applicants are encouraged to have no more than 18 credit hours per semester while in this position.
This part-time role offers flexible hours to accommodate academic schedules and involves regular mentoring sessions, event participation, and documentation of student interactions.

Work Location
Bloomington, Indiana.
This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.
Advertised Salary
$12.00 per hour
Work Hours
10 hours per week, with a maximum of 29 hours per week across all positions of employment held with Indiana University.
