DescriptionThe Stone Center for Latin American Studies (SCLAS) at Tulane University, which includes a core community of 70+ faculty across a broad spectrum of disciplinary and professional fields, invites applications for a Professor of Practice who will also serve as Director of Graduate Studies & Faculty Engagement. This is a 12-month, full-time faculty position with administrative duties centered on graduate teaching, advising, and curricular and program leadership in Latin American Studies.
Position Overview
The Director of Graduate Studies & Faculty Engagement will provide academic leadership for the M.A. and Ph.D. programs in Latin American Studies, as well as joint degrees with the Business School, Law School, and Department of Art History. The position emphasizes graduate-level teaching, mentoring, and curricular development, and requires close collaboration with faculty across the university. While the role will primarily focus on graduate programs, the Director will also coordinate with the Director of Undergraduate Studies to ensure curricular coherence across the Stone Center's academic offerings. A demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary research methods, including from the humanities and/or social sciences, is important.
Responsibilities include:
- Serve as the primary academic advisor for graduate students in Latin American Studies.
- Teach at least 1-2 courses per semester, including the graduate Core Seminar and the Pedagogy and Practice course for graduate instructors.
- Coordinate and monitor the graduate curriculum, ensuring rigor, innovation, and relevance to student professional development.
- Train, mentor, and evaluate graduate-student instructors for the Latin American Studies undergraduate curriculum.
- Lead graduate recruitment, admissions, and orientation.
- Supervise graduate student research assistantships, fellowships, and professional development activities.
- Convene and lead faculty committees to review graduate admissions, funding, student progress, and academic awards.
- Facilitate collaboration with faculty across disciplines and maintain strong faculty-student engagement in research and teaching on Latin America.
- Support faculty and student access to Stone Center funding opportunities and external grant programs.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Latin American Studies or a related field with a strong Latin American focus.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching, mentoring, and academic advising.
- Experience in program administration and curriculum development.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Native or advanced proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese, and English.
- Research and/or professional experience in Latin America.
