Position Information

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications Position Summary
This position will serve as the lab manager/research technician for the research lab of Dr. Anumantha G Kanthasamy in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. The research lab conducts NIH-funded basic research pertaining to neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory mechanisms in cell culture and preclinical mouse models of Parkinson's disease and related neurological disorders. The lab's translational research focuses on biomarker discovery in human samples and testing novel therapeutics in preclinical animal models.
Responsibilities of this position will include multiple aspects of scientific research including experimental design and execution, assay optimization and validation, data collection, and project management. Prior experience with mouse work. The employee will perform multiple behavioral, neurobiochemical and histological assays.

Experience and/or willingness to handle rodents
-Ability to effectively communicate, maintain accurate documentation, and
pay attention to detail.
-Ability to work in a sometimes-stressful environment.
-Ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills while carrying out instructions.
-Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality, while providing
consultation to a variety of stakeholders.
-Basic computer knowledge in MS Word and Excel.
Physical Demands
-Lift up to 30 pounds.
-Dealing with stressful situations.
-Manual dexterity to work with small, delicate pieces of
equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.
-Wearing all protective gear, including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety
goggles.
-Work for long periods of time with arms extended.

Organize and assist in implementation of research projects including data
collection and project management. Read and develop basic understanding
of research project protocols. Maintain accurate records with every aspect
of research projects. Proper disposal of biohazard waste. Perform
inventory, and provide basic maintenance and ordering of research
supplies and equipment.
Percentage of time 50 Duties/Responsibilities
Animal care includes daily monitoring of physical health/well-being,
administering treatments, and management. Assist with the collection of
blood and urine.
Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities
Responsibilities of this position will include multiple aspects of scientific research including experimental design and execution, assay optimization and validation, data collection, and project management. Prior experience with mouse work is highly preferred. The employee will perform multiple behavioral, neurobiochemical and histological assays.
Percentage of time 20 Duties/Responsibilities
Professionally communicate with investigators and colleagues concerning
the affected work flow, time limitations, and project status. Maintain a
positive attitude and calm demeanor throughout stressful situations. Accept
constructive criticism. Write report and present to colleagues and supervisor.
Maintain accurate records with every aspect of research projects.
