Job DescriptionThe Department of Nutrition Sciences ( DNS ), School of Health Professions ( SHP ) at The University of Alabama at Birmingham is accepting applications for a full-time, non-tenure-earning position at the rank of Instructor (12-month appointment). Candidates should hold a master's or doctoral degree in Nutrition, Food, Dietetics, or a closely related field from an accredited institution. The candidate must also be currently credentialed as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist ( RDN ) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration with experience in culinary medicine. The successful candidate should be committed to excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and to working effectively with faculty, staff, and stakeholders. The responsibilities of this position include teaching 2-3 courses (undergraduate and/or graduate) per academic semester, developing new and revising existing course content, and creating instructional materials to support existing and future courses for traditional and non-traditional adult learners in culinary and community nutrition. Additional responsibilities will be to serve on program, department, and university committees as needed.
The Department of Nutrition Sciences is one of five departments in the School of Health Professions ( SHP ). The Department has been involved in the field of nutrition for over 60 years with the establishment of its Dietetic Internship program in 1963. Since then, the Department continues to provide tailored pathways to pursue the RDN credential and has emerged as one of the leaders in the field of nutrition sciences through groundbreaking research, mentorship, and instruction. The Department has robust programs in obesity, diabetes, and cancer, and sponsors two NIH funded research centers (Diabetes Research Center and Nutrition Obesity Research Center. The School of Health Professions is one of the nation's largest schools of its type with over twenty programs at the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels. SHP is one of six medical-focused schools in a thriving academic health center. UAB is among the highest tier of US research institutions and SHP is currently ranked in the top three for NIH funding for similar schools.
Required Qualifications
Candidates should hold a master's or doctoral degree in Nutrition, Food, Dietetics, or a closely related field with at least 3 years of experience in an academic, clinical, culinary medicine, or industry setting. The candidate must also be currently credentialed as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist ( RDN ) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants with prior college-level teaching and culinary medicine experience. Strong supervisory and mentorship skills, including experience working with staff, students, and volunteers, are also highly preferred.
