Job Description
The Medical University of South Carolina James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine is seeking a Chair of Department of Reconstructive and Rehabilitation Sciences. The Department of Reconstructive and Rehabilitation Sciences (RRS) at MUSC's College of Dental Medicine comprises two divisions: Pre-doctoral Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry, along with a graduate program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD). The department is dedicated to advancing education and clinical practice in prosthodontics, restorative dentistry, and digital dentistry. Outstanding candidate may be appointed into an endowed position.
Chair is to mentor, grow and provide alignment with the College's strategic plan and to increase collaboration within divisions and work with other Departments and units within the college.
The Chair of the Department of Reconstructive and Rehabilitation Sciences oversees all aspects of predoctoral education in prosthodontics, restorative dentistry, and digital dentistry, both preclinically and clinically. Additionally, the Chair leads comprehensive care clinical education and the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program. The role involves mentoring faculty, clinic managers, ensuring compliance with clinical requirements, managing educational grants associated with predoctoral clinics, and overseeing budgetary responsibilities. The division chiefs report directly to the Chair.
The Chair of Department of Reconstructive and Rehabilitation Sciences carries out the following essential job functions:
- Oversee predoctoral education in prosthodontics, restorative dentistry, and digital dentistry, including both preclinical and clinical components.
- Lead comprehensive care clinical education, ensuring alignment with program objectives and accreditation standards.
- Manage the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program, overseeing curriculum development, clinical training, and resident supervision.
- Provide mentorship to division chiefs, program directors, faculty and staff.
- Ensure compliance with clinical requirements, competencies, and accreditation standards.
- Collaborate with clinical affairs to enhance clinical education experiences and outcomes.
- Manage educational grants associated with predoctoral education and clinics, ensuring appropriate utilization and compliance with grant requirements.
- Oversee budgetary responsibilities for the department, including financial planning and resource allocation.
- Participate in departmental and college-wide committees, meetings, and initiatives.
- Be an active member of and work collaboratively with the Deans Leadership Council (DLC)
- Foster a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement within the department.
- Maintain active involvement in professional development activities.
Minimum Qualifications: See other one
- D.D.S./D.M.D. degree from a CODA accredited dental school or foreign equivalent.
- Advanced training in prosthodontics or restorative dentistry preferred.
- Board certification or eligibility in prosthodontics or restorative dentistry preferred.
- Minimum of ten years of teaching experience in dental education, history of leadership and supervision.
- Experience in clinical education administration and accreditation processes.
- Strong leadership and management skills.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Eligibility for licensure or faculty dental license in South Carolina.
- Qualified as a full professor.
Collaborative Responsibilities:
- Report directly to the Dean of the College of Dental Medicine.
- Work collaboratively with the other two department chairs, Associate Deans for Clinical Affairs and Academic Affairs, and Assistant Dean for Finance.
- Work closely with the Assistant Dean for Innovation in implementing innovative methods in education, research, and continuing education.
