About Westchester Community College:Westchester Community College was founded in 1946 as the New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in White Plains. In 1957, the County of Westchester bought the 360-acre John Hartford estate in Valhalla and designated 218 acres for the community college. Job Description:
SUNY Westchester Community College's JobSTAR Program is seeking to hire an Adjunct Faculty member to teach a non-credit Adult Basic Education (A.B.E.) course at SUNY WCC Mount Vernon Extension Center. The successful candidate will provide high-quality instruction designed to support adult learners in strengthening foundational academic skills, advancing educational attainment, and preparing for academic, workforce, and personal success. The program covers reading, writing, and mathematics for learners performing at the eighth-grade level or below. It is also a program for students needing to improve language arts and mathematics skills in preparation for their General Equivalency high school diploma. Curriculum content includes literacy and math instruction, HSE test preparation, work readiness training, college and career exploration, and work experience. The program supports learners by providing on-ramps at various levels through three program components, each supported by case management and wrap-around services. Classes will be offered in person, on-campus, and during the day. Under the supervision of the JobSTAR Director, the ABE Instructor will provide contextualized instruction in literacy and math to JobSTAR students.
The Adjunct Faculty/Adult Basic Education will:
- Administer the initial TABE test to enrolled students and post-test towards the completion of the semester.
- Develop lesson plans and adjust instruction according to the various learning styles of program participants. Maintain a collaborative learning environment.
- Facilitate instruction in all assigned subject areas of the ABE course (Language Arts and Math).
- Plan, prepare and instruct lessons in accordance with the curriculum and use a variety of methodologies with the purpose of building ABE content knowledge and skills.
- Create engaging lessons in ABE that develop student critical thinking, problem solving, and test taking skills.
- Continually assess student progress toward mastery of standards and keep students and staff well informed of student progress or concerns by collecting and tracking data, providing daily feedback and weekly assessments.
- Provide necessary accommodation and modifications for growth and success of all students.
- Administer and utilize standardized assessments to develop curricula targeting the educational challenges of the students.
- Lead engagement and follow-up efforts to ensure participants' progress towards positive outcomes.
- Implement strategies to maximize student learning and retention.
- Enter daily attendance using provided attendance sheet and monitor student participation.
Requirements:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field is required. Candidates must possess demonstrated knowledge of Adult Basic Education (ABE) and High School Equivalency (HSE) curricula, including applicable testing procedures, standards, and program requirements. Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in promoting educational achievement and student success are required. The successful candidate must also exhibit strong instructional, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively support diverse adult learners in achieving their academic and career goals.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A Master's degree in Education or a related field is strongly preferred. A minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching adult learners with varied ages, skill levels, and diverse cultural and educational backgrounds is also strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience delivering instruction in workforce development, non-credit training, or technology-focused programs is highly desirable. The successful candidate will possess a strong commitment to student success, inclusive teaching practices, and excellence in adult education.
Additional Information:
WORK SCHEDULE: The work schedule is 5 hours per day, 2 days per week, at our Mount Vernon Extension Center.
POSITION EFFECTIVE: Fall 2026
HOURLY RATE OF PAY: $63.20 per hour. No benefits.
