Job Summary
The Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach is a twelve month, full-time position that supports the overall mission of the Athletic Department by assisting the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance in providing a comprehensive strength and conditioning program focused on the health, safety, and performance of student-athletes. This individual will design and implement year-round training programs for assigned sports, working closely with sport coaches to ensure alignment with competitive goals and NCAA compliance. Team assignments will be assigned by the Assistant Athletic Director for Sport Performance based on departmental needs.
Job Duties
- Coordinate daily with Sport Performance staff to ensure unified training standards and department alignment.
- Communicate regularly with sport coaches regarding training goals, athlete readiness, and competitive demands.
- Collaborate with athletic trainers to integrate injury-prevention strategies and return-to-play progressions.
- Develop periodized training programs aligned with sport calendars and competitive objectives.
- Create individualized modifications based on athlete needs, performance data, and medical considerations.
- Lead daily training sessions with technical instruction, movement correction, and performance feedback.
- Monitor athlete safety, readiness, and training intensity to optimize performance and reduce injury risk.
- Demonstrate proper technique and provide real-time coaching cues to enhance movement quality.
- Track performance metrics and adjust training prescriptions based on data and coach feedback.
- Ensure compliance and sound judgment with the University's Title IX and other MSU policies and procedures.
- Manage MSU and student information confidentially and ethically.
- Assist with the coordination and performance on competition day management, as necessary.
- Possible team travel as requested on an as needed basis.
- Perform other duties, including administrative, as assigned by the Assistant Athletic Director for Sport Performance and/or the Vice President & Director of Athletics or designee.
Requested Minimum Qualifications
Education:
The successful candidate must have a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Experience:
At least a minimum of one year of collegiate strength and conditioning coaching experience is required.
Certifications Required:
Current certifications through the National Strength Coaches Association (NSCA) or the Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA); and CPR & First Aid. Both must be maintained throughout employment.
Other Preferences for Consideration
- Education Preferred: A Master's degree in a related discipline is preferred.
- Experience Preferred: Division I experience is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Candidates should be able to provide demonstrative instruction/feedback to student-athletes while standing.
- Candidates should be able to lift, pull and push equipment used during training. Must be able to climb stairs, bend, squat and other movements associated with training student-athletes.
- Candidates must be able to safely use training equipment associated with the role. Must also be able to use various technology to include a computer, laptop, telephone, sport science software, etc.
