The University of Alabama at Birmingham ( UAB ) Heersink School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, is recruiting a PhD scientist or surgeon-scientist with a strong track record in basic, translational or preclinical research to serve in the Division of Trauma & Acute Care Surgery. Successful candidates will be appointed to an open rank and tenure position commensurate with their qualifications. This position is designed to enhance the research mission, mentorship infrastructure, and extramural funding portfolio of the Division.

A substantial portion of the candidate's effort will be dedicated to independent and collaborative research leadership, grant writing, and mentorship of faculty, residents, fellows, and trainees across both divisions. Protected research effort and infrastructure support will be provided commensurate with experience and funding. The remaining effort may include teaching, program development, and service activities aligned with the candidate's expertise and career goals.

The Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery provides a comprehensive multidisciplinary program of care for severely injured multisystem trauma and burn victims, as well as those requiring emergency surgical procedures and surgical critical care. UAB Hospital is the only Level I Trauma Center verified by the American College of Surgeons in the state of Alabama, and is a major treatment center in the southeastern U.S. for patients suffering traumatic injury. The Division is engaged in active research related to improving the fields of trauma, burn, emergency general surgery and surgical critical care. The Division also houses a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship program that is ACGME accredited and accepts four fellows per year.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham, one of three autonomous institutions within The University of Alabama System, is the only four-year, public university in the state's largest metropolitan area. For fiscal year 2021-2022 (most recent available), the University's economic impact on the Birmingham area exceeds $12.1 billion to the state. In FY2022, UAB received over $715 million in NIH extramural grants and contracts. As of the fall of 2022, the University employed 26,000 people, had a faculty of 3,176 (~45% of whom are female), and had a student enrollment of just under 22,000 at the undergraduate through doctoral levels. The graduate student population is 64% female and 38% are among ethnic minorities.

UAB is comprised of 10 academic colleges and schools in the health sciences and academic areas. The UAB Academic Health Center includes the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Optometry, Public Health, Health Professions; the Graduate School; and the Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences. The University's academic campus consists of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Schools of Business, Education, and Engineering; the Graduate School; and the Mervyn Sterne Library. The university has 136 endowed chairs/professorships. UAB has been ranked among the top quarter of all U.S. colleges and universities by The Princeton Review.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D., and will be an outstanding leader and highly skilled, widely recognized in the field with a strong track record. Candidate should have substantial professional work experience in one or more areas of research, teaching and/or service.
