About Westchester Community College:Westchester Community College was founded in 1946 as the New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in White Plains. In 1957, the County of Westchester bought the 360-acre John Hartford estate in Valhalla and designated 218 acres for the community college. Job Description:
Westchester Community College's Office of Online Education seeks an Instructional Design Specialist to work with our Program Administrator and Associate Dean to support faculty in online course design, academic systems coordination, and utilization of the college's learning management system (i.e. Brightspace) to support the creation of learning resources, activities, and assessment strategies. The incumbent works with the Program Administrator to support faculty in adopting the use of digital learning tools and aligned academic systems, particularly with the use of the college's learning management system, Brightspace. Additional responsibilities include:
- Facilitate virtual and in-person professional development activities on the online video conferencing systems and Brightspace, learning management system, including content creation, assessment tools, gradebook setup, discussion forums, and communication features.
- Assist faculty in developing or redesigning courses for all online and hybrid course modalities using research-based pedagogical strategies.
- Train faculty in the use of the online course quality instruction and course design using industry-leading standards (e.g., Open SUNY/OLC Quality Scorecard).
- Support faculty in creating course-level assessments, activities, evaluation tools, rubrics, and learning artifacts to enhance college-wide program assessment activities.
- Review course materials and make recommendations regarding quality, engagement, grammatical accuracy, and functionality using instructional design rubrics.
- Develop training sessions, video tutorials, and asynchronous online modules to promote principles of accessibility compliance (Title II/ADA Section 508) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
- Support the configuration, maintenance, and quality review of academic systems while assisting with the creation of training documentation of academic system updates.
- Performs related duties as assigned to support the mission of the college.
Requirements:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required from an accredited college or university in Instructional Design, Education Technology, Education, Curriculum, or a related field. A minimum of two years of higher education experience in the design and development of online and hybrid instructional experiences is also required. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills; and the ability to work well with diverse personalities and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse population are required. Demonstrated knowledge and application of instructional design theory, instructional design principles, instructional technology, and active learning strategies also required. The successful candidate must also possess working knowledge of learning management systems, such as Brightspace, and other digital learning platforms.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A Master's degree, minimum of three years of higher education experience in the design and development of online and hybrid instructional experiences is also preferred. Familiarity with Zoom, video conferencing, screen video-recording software, and other online learning development tools. Also, working knowledge of Quality Matters Rubric & Accessibility Standards preferred.
Additional Information:
SALARY & BENEFITS: The starting salary is $74,384. Additional compensation with seniority steps maximize at a salary of $92,149. Benefits include comprehensive health coverage, a choice of defined benefit and/or defined contribution pension plan, generous leave benefits, and access to tax sheltered annuities and a deferred compensation plan.
